My Road to Retirement-Gloria Darling

Like you, I have retired after decades of a professional career. I’ve felt the warmth that comes with pride, respect, and the satisfaction of doing work I considered meaningful. Also, like so many retirees before me, I’ve grappled with the following questions: What will I do all day? What will my identity be without a career? What makes me happy? How will I remain socially engaged?

You may have experienced or know someone who has gone through one or more major life transition such as: divorce, single parenthood, death of immediate family members, empty nest, and/or entered retirement. If so, you are not alone. I’ve been there and done that for each one of those life changes. Some were more challenging to get through than others.

I had an eye-opening moment at a retirement party for a co-worker a few years before my own official retirement date. Several former staff attended that party including Ms. Jones. who retired five months before that party after completing 35 years of service. She complained to anyone who would listen about being miserable, with nothing to do so she might as well return to her old job.

Imagine the drop in enthusiasm for those of us who heard her. As soon as I was able to comfortably leave the area, I moved on to join a more festive discussion. However, I couldn’t let go of what I heard.

I was most shocked because during her retirement party Ms. Jones regaled us with her plans to travel and spend time with her grandbabies. It only took five months for her to realize that for her lifestyle the novelty of travel was limited and time with grandbabies was insufficient stimulation. She needed more, but since she didn’t have a clue what more was, she was exploring the familiarity of returning to her old job. Additionally, most of her friends were former co-workers who were not retired so she had little to no social interactions.

I vowed that I would have a plan for a retirement that didn’t require my old job title to define me. I devoted a great amount of time and effort to preparation and self-discovery. For me, there was no looking backwards and my life didn’t end. I just moved on to something else. I’ve found happiness and purpose in my retirement. You can too!
